Honouring the Legacy of Veikko Tapani Salli (1936–2025)

A Personal Reflection on Veikko Tapani Salli

Founder of Molok® — A Finnish Visionary Who Changed the Way the World Collects Waste
By Mark Hillis, Son-in-Law and Co-Owner, Molok North America Ltd.

He was a once-in-a-lifetime mentor.

Praises from Veikko were few and far between — but when they came, you knew you had truly earned them. His pet name for me was “Stupid Boy,” always said with that unmistakable twinkle in his eye — a mix of mischief, pride, and affection.

Over the years, I learned more from him than I could have imagined: lessons in manufacturing and engineering precision, the art (and frustration) of golf, and how to set nets for fish in the quiet northern lakes of Finland. I learned how to rise with the sun to check those nets the next morning — and how to appreciate the silence and solitude of a small island cottage in the Sea of Bothnia.

It was there that life slowed to a gentler rhythm — each day ending with a sauna, a plunge into icy waters, and the quiet peace that only Finland can offer.

Even in his later years, Veikko’s belief in the potential of the North American market never faded. When my daughter Mona and I visited him last spring at his home in Nokia to celebrate his 89th birthday — and, as it turned out, to share our final goodbye — he told us with conviction that once he recovered, he would come to Canada “to make sure you’re running Molok North America properly.”

That was Veikko to the end: precise, determined, and always pushing for better.

For all his accomplishments, I believe his greatest heartbreak was the loss of his daughter — my late wife, Marja in 2018 — who inherited his courage and entrepreneurial fire. As she used to say, she “came to Canada as a single mother to sell her daddy’s product in a male-dominated industry.” The apple didn’t fall far from the tree.

Today, Mona and I, as co-owners of Molok North America, are deeply honoured to carry forward the torch of his paradigm-shifting innovation — the crane-lifted, semi-underground waste and recycling collection system known around the world as Molok®.

A Vision That Endures

At Molok North America, we pause to honour the remarkable life and legacy of Veikko Tapani Salli, whose creativity, courage, and sisu — that uniquely Finnish determination against all odds — gave rise to a global innovation.

Veikko was an engineer, entrepreneur, inventor, philanthropist, avid golfer and boater, and above all, a devoted father and grandfather.

Born in Karhusuo in 1936 to schoolteacher parents, Veikko’s curiosity and discipline shaped a lifetime of engineering excellence. After graduating as a mechanical engineer in 1962, he founded companies that transformed Finnish construction — including Isepol and later V. Salli Oy / SPU, producer of lightweight structural insulation panels that remain a trusted Nordic brand today.

Through the 1970s and ’80s, he designed and built hotels and sports halls across Finland. When the recession of the late 1980s forced his business into bankruptcy, Veikko turned adversity into innovation — transforming hardship into opportunity.

Out of challenge came invention.
Guided by his belief in design thinking and relentless problem-solving, he created the Molok® semi-underground waste container — a paradigm-shifting system that redefined cleanliness, efficiency, and sustainability worldwide.

What began as a single idea in Finland has grown into a global standard, now used by millions of people in more than 45 countries — a lasting testament to Veikko’s ingenuity, perseverance, and vision.

Even later in life, his inventive spirit never slowed. He engineered the Nooa-Arctic floating dock system, constructed and operated the 10,000 m² Hanko Boat Storage Hall, and continued mentoring and supporting Finnish golfers on the international stage.

He loved his modest island cottage, his boat, his family, and the endless pursuit of better ideas. His mind was always at work — whether sketching a new concept, fine-tuning a mechanism, or simply improving what already worked well.

Veikko’s life reminds us that setbacks can spark breakthroughs — that true innovation comes from faith, courage, and purpose.
