Newmarket goes SMART™

Downtown Newmarket transforms a messy site thanks to Molok® containers & has gone to the next level by adding our new SMART™ technology to prevent illegal dumping

Before: downtown Newmarket struggling with illegal dumping

This location in downtown Newmarket Ontario serves a combination of businesses, retail stores, and residential units. As you can see in the photo above, the dumpsters struggled to keep up with the waste, and seemed to attract illegal dumping, resulting in an out of control messy site.

After: Chaos eliminated with the new Molok® waste station

Feedback from the Town:

One of the biggest issues we experienced with the front-end bins was that they were prone to illegal dumping. As a result, bins would often overflow, or material would be left around them, creating an unsightly mess that staff regularly had to clean up, which detracted from the overall appearance of the downtown area. Another challenge with the openly available bins was that recycling diversion was difficult to manage effectively.

Piloting the Molok system allows us to explore a different type of waste management solution for the area and better support waste diversion in our downtown. The new system helps deter illegal dumping, provides data on waste generation and disposal, keeps the area clean, and improves the aesthetics of the downtown. It also ensures that only those authorized to use the bins have access.

Waste Advising

Working with Angelo, our local waste advisor, the team in Newmarket decided to install 3 of Molok’s semi-underground containers to handle waste, recycling and organics and added our newest innovation for managing waste, SMART™! There are two unique functions – the electronic lock system allows them to manage who has access to the bins, and the waste sensors track the fill level, so to know when the bins need to be emptied. The dashboard reporting offers control and insights.

Access Management: containers can be opened with cell phones or fobs.

This is a win in so many ways:

  • More efficient – less wasted time cleaning up the site, and no wasted collections

  • Because it’s more efficient it saves on operation costs over time

  • Uses less space – more available parking next to the waste station

  • Clearly looks a whole lot better!

  • And increases diversion with proper waste stream collection

  • The online dashboard allows for easy updating on user access and provides historical insights.

Truly a pilot that has allowed the Town of Newmarket to take control and better manage waste!

Dashboard shows current sensor reading: how full is the container? Doesn’t need to be emptied yet! Reporting frequency can be customized - want a daily read on full level, no problem. Twice, three times… as often as you need. Can set alerts that once the container fill reaches a designated level, notifications go out via email.
Track & pay only for the collections you receive!
